Quinoa, Spring Walking, Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome (PFAS)

April 22, 2026 Danielle Van Schaick, Registered Dietitian

Quinoa is making news for its sustainability but Is this ancient grain better for you?

Compared to rice and other common grains, quinoa provides more protein, fibre, B vitamins, potassium and magnesium.

Try quinoa instead of rice, in a salad, or even in place of flour in chocolate cake :)

How many Calories Does Walking Burn?

For a 200 lb adult, walking 10,000 steps can burn up to 500 calories/day = 1lb/week weight loss.

If you are a lighter (or older) adult, you may need to walk more than 10,000 steps per day.
Your weight, speed and terrain also affects how many calories you burn.

Average Calories burned walking 10,000 steps:

  • 120 lbs (54 kg): 250–300 calories

  • 160 lbs (73 kg): 350–400 calories

  • 200 lbs (91 kg): 450–500+ calories

12 Health Benefits of Walking

What is Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome (PFAS)

In the Spring when the pollen count is high, you may find that you get a reaction to some fruits and vegetables that you're usually okay eating.   With PFAS, the proteins in certain fresh fruits, vegetables and tree nuts are similar to those in pollens, and this “cross-reactivity” can cause allergic symptoms like itchiness of the mouth and throat.
